Gwyneth Paltrow and I have so much in common.
I, too, am breathtakingly beautiful and starred in a series of Hollywood films when I was younger.
Oh, wait….no, we both just turned 50. That’s it. My bad.
Gwyneth recently wrote about her thoughts on this milestone and I was particularly taken by her mantra: I accept
“And while I do what I can to strive for good health and longevity, to stave off weakening muscles and receding bone, I have a mantra I insert into those reckless thoughts that try to derail me: I accept. I accept the marks and the loosening skin, the wrinkles. I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity. I accept my humanity.”
What I hear in this is that the mantra helps us return, to a more loving centre. Our beautiful, naughty brains are incredibly skilled at finding things that will disturb us; that grey hair, those extra few pounds round the belly, the too few pounds on the bank balance. Brains find threats naturally, easily, first, fast and continuously. They don’t have to be real or true to unsettle us. My expanding waistline isn’t exactly going to start a war. But the invectives will continue apace if not disrupted.
And that’s where the mantra comes in.
I accept.
I accept.
Something so simple that it doesn’t require any extra mental calories of effort to implement.
I accept.
